In British Columbia, cannabis isn’t just a crop—it’s a culture. For decades, growers here have been tending to this plant with the kind of patience, passion, and precision that defines true craftsmanship. And while legalization may have changed the landscape, the spirit of BC Bud lives on through a different kind of collective—one built not on contracts and logos, but on shared values, lived history, and mutual respect for the plant.

Welcome to the BC Craft Cannabis Collective, brought together at the Victoria Cannabis Company Flagship Retail Store, VCC Farmgate.

This isn’t a trade association or a government-certified label. It’s a grassroots movement of small-scale growers, extractors, and heritage brands who believe in growing cannabis the right way—slow, intentional, and rooted in community. Of course, we are proud members of this tight knit community. This article is to showcase some of the best of our friends and colleagues in BC.

What Is the BC Craft Cannabis Collective?

A collective, in our eyes, is about connection. The BC Craft Cannabis Collective isn’t a legal entity or marketing gimmick—it’s a real network of producers who’ve come together through trust, philosophy, and a shared refusal to compromise. It includes micro cultivators, extractors, and legacy heads now operating under the legal framework, with a common thread: quality over quantity, and culture over corporate.

At VCC Farmgate, we don’t just stock these producers—we visit them, talk shop, and puff on the flower we all love. This collective is built one sesh at a time. Every product on our shelves has a face and a story behind it. And you better believe we’ve inhaled, vaped or consumed it first!

The Roots of Craft: Why BC Is Different

BC’s unique geography helped shape a cannabis culture long before the law caught up. Remote valleys, island microclimates, and off-grid communities gave rise to a generation of growers who learned to do more with less—and better than anyone else. From the backwoods of the Kootenays to the shores of Salt Spring, these pioneers weren’t just chasing high THC—they were creating living soil blends, trading rare genetics, and refining techniques that would go on to define the global reputation of “BC Bud.”

Craft cannabis in this province isn’t an aesthetic. It’s an ethic. It means small batches, hand trimming, and cold curing. It means keeping your team tight and your standards tighter. It means growing with intention, not for shareholders.

“When choosing flower that we want to represent in the dispensary (Farmgate), we look at the product and the company that is growing it. For us it’s not just to bring the heat with the SKUs, the company must also align with the traditional market values we all came up with prior to legalization. Treat staff right, tell honest stories and above all respect the flower.” — Kyp Rowe, VP Brand Development VCC

This is not meant to be an entire list of the brands you’ll find at our VCC Cannabis Store, but it should give you a sense of the kinds of products we carry and why.

woody nelson

Woody Nelson — The Tech-Forward Traditionalist

Location: Nelson, BC
Signature Style: Vertical farming meets organic soil, executed with surgical precision.
Featured Cultivar: Rainbow Driver

Woody Nelson might be one of the most innovative producers in Canada—but they’re still deeply tied to the roots of the Kootenays. Their founders grew up shredding local mountains and sneaking joints under starry skies. Today, they’ve built a 26,000-square-foot vertical cultivation facility that blends automation, analytics, and old-school sensibility.

Their flower—like the award-winning Rainbow Driver and 33 Splitter—is grown in true living soil using glacial-fed water, then dried, cold-cured, and hand-trimmed to perfection. Every decision they make, from the lighting spectrum to the hang-dry schedule, is about consistency and quality.

“This is about doing right by the people that got us here. This is about community.” – Walker Patton, Chief Commercial Officer

kootenay cultivar

Kootenay Cultivar — Legacy Lives Here

Location: Salmo, BC
Signature Style: Organic living soil cultivation with a legacy soul.
Featured Cultivar: OJ Zainbow

Raised in the hills of Ymir by “hippie outlaws,” Kootenay Cultivar co-founder Tyeson Carmody’s earliest memory of cannabis was running from an RCMP chopper. Decades later, he and his team are growing some of the cleanest, terp-rich flower in the province. Their ethos? Respect the plant, respect the people, and never compromise.

They’re known for bringing living soil organics (LSO) to a new level, crafting vibrant cultivars like OJ Zainbow, Meringue Kush, and Fugu. These cultivars aren’t just potent—they’re expressive, flavour-forward, and grown with an obsessive attention to soil biology and mineral balance.

“We know we are growing and creating products that can provide a profound experience for the consumer and it’s our responsibility to always present what we believe will provide the best possible experience. The fact that the consumer puts their trust in us is something we take very seriously, we obsess over the details and hopefully that shows in our flower.” – Tyeson Carmody, Director of Cultivation and Co founder Kootenay Cultivar

wildcard extracts

Wildcard Extracts — A Resin For Living

Location: Salmon Arm, BC
Signature Style: Precision extraction with a craft cultivator’s heart.
Featured Cultivar: Pomelo Skunk x VCC Resin-Infused Pre-Rolls

Wildcard is the house brand of Pantheon Cannabis Group, but don’t get it twisted—they operate more like a band of resin rebels. With deep respect for the cultivators they collaborate with, Wildcard designs every product to showcase the best of the flower that feeds it.

Whether it’s cured resin, live resin, or award-winning vapes like Space Panda, Wildcard’s strength is their curiosity. They tinker, they trial, they obsess over the balance between intensity and flavour. Their recent collabs with Sweetgrass, Coast Mountain Cannabis, and VCC highlight the symbiotic beauty of grower-extractor relationships.

“We have been working with the amazing team at VCC since very early on as a company, and it has been nothing but great times and great buds!! Every extract starts with the flowers from growing to the curing which these people pay great attention to, so working with them was a no brainer for me. They are always hunting down the next great strain or terpene combo and I am always excited to get that call that more delicious material is heading to our facility for extraction! Space cake is still my all time favourite “ – Parker Kulcheski Extraction Specialist

How VCC Chooses Craft Partners

We don’t pick our partners from a product catalogue. We meet on their turf, in their gardens, and at their trim tables. We look for people who love the plant more than the profit, who light up when talking about soil biology or cultivar lineage, and who aren’t afraid to push the envelope.

If you’re producing excellent product and want to scale to 500,000 sq. ft.? That’s cool—it just might not be us. We’re looking for people who want to do it right, not just big. Every relationship we build is grounded in shared philosophy: transparency, sustainability, and deep respect for BC’s Traditional Market culture.

Why This Collective Matters More Than Ever

In a legal market dominated by big brands and race-to-the-bottom pricing, the BC Craft Cannabis Collective is a lifeline. These are the people keeping cannabis honest, preserving its flavours, its rituals, and its roots. Without them, we’re left with irradiated flower, mass-market mediocrity, and a loss of the culture that cannabis emerged from.

At VCC Farmgate, we believe you deserve to know who grew your bud—and why. That’s why our shelves aren’t stocked with anonymous names. They’re filled with cultivars that have stories, growers who have passion, and products that were made with care.

If we don’t hold the line, craft fades.

And with it, a piece of BC’s soul.
