We’ve all been there. You get ready to spark a pre-roll and regret sets in from the first puff. Canoeing, harsh smoke, and dried-out flower are just some of the common complaints that plague the market. Corporate cannabis brands have flooded dispensaries with mass-produced pre-rolls that look good on the shelf but often fail where it counts—the experience.
At Victoria Cannabis Company (VCC), we know exactly how frustrating it is to waste money on a pre-roll that burns unevenly, tastes harsh, or just doesn’t hit the way it should. We’ve been in the Traditional BC Craft scene long before legalization, so we’ve seen it all. That’s why we put in the work to make craft pre-rolls that actually deliver.
Let’s break down the five biggest complaints about pre-rolls—and the ways that VCC addresses them with our traditional craft cannabis. Do we eliminate all these problems 100% of the time? No, but we get damn close and we’re always getting closer.
Nothing kills an enjoyable session faster than a pre-roll that burns like a half-melted candle. One side races ahead while the other barely catches. You try to fix it with a little spit the lighter trick or risk burning your fingertips by doing “surgery” on a lit joint, but it just gets worse.
Canoeing happens when a pre-roll is packed unevenly or the grind size isn’t consistent. Corporate cannabis brands often pre-grind flower in bulk and use industrial filling machines, which can lead to inconsistencies in density. Some areas burn too fast, while others stay packed too tight. Add in overly dry flower, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
Ever taken a pull from a pre-roll that instantly made your throat itchy and scratchy? That’s not how good cannabis is supposed to feel. Coughing used to be part of the experience of cannabis, but it need not be this way. A harsh smoke usually means one of two things: Overly dry flower and/or low-quality inputs.
When cannabis flower is rushed to harvest, over-milled, or just plain old, it loses moisture and terpenes—the compounds responsible for flavour and smoothness. What’s left is a harsh, hot smoke that makes your throat and lungs work harder than they should.
It’s not just about dryness, either. Many corporate cannabis pre-rolls use trim, shake, or lower-tier buds instead of premium flower. That means you’re burning more stems and leaves than actual top-shelf cannabis. The result? A throat-burning, cough-inducing experience that has nothing to do with potency and everything to do with cutting corners.
If you’ve ever cracked open a pre-roll and had the bud practically crumble in your fingers, you already know the frustration of stale, lifeless flower. It might as well be dust in the wind at that point.
Corporate cannabis operates on large distribution models, meaning product can sit in warehouses or on shelves for months before it gets to you. Many of these brands grind their flower weeks—sometimes even months—before packaging. By the time it lands in your hands, it’s already lost much of its moisture, aroma, and trichomes.
With BC Craft cannabis, small-batch growers work differently. We hang-dry our flower properly, cure it to perfection, and package in smaller runs to keep it fresh. It’s the difference between biting into a fresh-baked, artisanal donut and a day-old sitting in the display case at 7-11.
A pre-roll should burn smoothly from start to finish, but when they’re packed too tightly, you’re left sucking air which is like trying to drink a thick milkshake through a straw. On the flip side, if it’s too loose, it burns too fast, wasting flower and delivering uneven hits.
Packing problems often come down to mass-production shortcuts. Machine-filled pre-rolls don’t account for differences in cultivar density or grind texture, leading to airflow issues. A well-packed pre-roll should provide just the right resistance—not too tight, not too loose.
THC percentage isn’t the whole story. Too many consumers have bought a high-THC pre-roll expecting fireworks, only to feel underwhelmed or unsatisfied.
A pre-roll made from poorly grown, low-terpene flower won’t deliver a strong or balanced effect, even if the THC is high. Machine trimmed flower also can remove many of the precious trichomes. It’s like drinking over-proof alcohol—it’ll get you lit, but it’s missing depth, flavour, and character.
On the other hand, a well-crafted pre-roll made with premium genetics, proper curing, and rich terpene content can provide a great high even at lower THC percentages. It’s why most seasoned consumers will choose a top-tier craft pre-roll over an infused pre-roll loaded with distillate.
It goes without saying that we’re not perfect and are always striving to be exceptional.
Not all cannabis is cultivated equally. Of course it starts with genetics and only gets more challenging from there. VCC only uses premium, hand-selected cultivars—the kind of flower we’d smoke ourselves. Our pre-rolls are made with the same flower we sell in dried format—no shake, no trim, no low-tier leftovers.
G-Wagon – A true indica powerhouse with rich, savoury notes of lime corn chips and gas.
After Eighth – A linalool-dominant hybrid with a floral, burnt sugar aroma for a refined experience.
Pomelo Skunk – A citrus bouquet with bright lemon-fuel notes and a lively, energetic high.
Rainbow Marker – A soapy funk trip for the senses—tropical fruit meets sweet earth, with a funky diesel twist.
Caribbean Breeze – Drenched in juicy citrus and caramelized pineapple, Caribbean Breeze is a vibrant indica with a smooth, sun-kissed finish.
Unlike corporate cannabis, we don’t rush production. Our small-batch approach ensures our flower is properly hang-dried, cured, and packaged at peak freshness. That means every pre-roll you pick up delivers maximum flavour and smoothness—never stale, never lifeless.
No Harsh Smoke – Because we use premium, slow-cured buds.
Less Canoeing – Because consistency in packing matters.
No Stale Pre-Rolls – Because fresh cannabis always burns better.
No Weak Effects – Our craft pre-rolls are heavy hitters.
Flavour For Days – We don’t grow football fields of cannabis so we can ensure terpenes and trichomes stay in-tact.
Once upon a time, rolling your own was standard. Now? Pre-rolls are becoming the automatic transmission of cannabis consumption. They’re easy, convenient, and allow you to sample a cultivar without committing to a full quarter or ounce.
Younger consumers are choosing pre-rolls over dried flower at an increasing rate. That’s why G-Wagon, one of VCC’s best-selling cultivars, sells even faster in pre-roll format. More consumers are looking for high-quality, grab-and-go options that don’t sacrifice flavour or experience.
